About Convergence Insufficiency: From Classic Diagnosis to Modern, Evidence-Based with Dr. Justin Chelette, OD, FAAO

Course Description

Join Justin Chelette, OD, FAAO, for an essential course on Convergence Insufficiency (CI), a highly prevalent binocular vision disorder. CI is one of the most common causes of ocular discomfort and muscular asthenopia 1, affecting an estimated 5-8% of the general population2. The prevalence is notably higher in at-risk populations, found in approximately 48% of veterans exposed to blast injuries and 40% of the population that has experienced traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)3. This course will equip clinicians with the knowledge to diagnose CI accurately and implement the most effective, evidence-based treatment strategies.

Course Highlights:

This presentation moves beyond traditional definitions to explore the modern understanding of CI, including its neurological basis and real-world implications.

  • The Modern View of CI: Explore the complex question of whether CI is a muscle or a brain problem 4by reviewing fMRI studies showing that successful vision therapy leads to functional changes in brain regions such as the Frontal Eye Fields and the Oculomotor Vermis (cerebellum)5.
  • Comorbidities and Impact: Understand the significant clinical implications of CI, including its frequent comorbidity alongside ADHD and its negative effect on quality of life, academic performance, and task achievement in both adults and children6.
  • Comprehensive Diagnosis: Learn how to accurately diagnose CI by mastering the key components of a full workup, including tests of ocular alignment, fusional vergence ranges, accommodation, and the use of symptom surveys like the CISS7777.
  • Evidence-Based Treatment: Compare and contrast the three primary treatment options: Lenses, Prisms, and Vision Therapy8. A recent meta-analysis confirms that office-based vision therapy with home reinforcement is the most effective treatment for symptomatic CI9.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  1. Provide a comprehensive overview of the Convergence Insufficiency condition10.
  2. Accurately diagnose CI using a full battery of clinical tests and diagnostic criteria11.
  3. Discuss and implement the most effective, evidence-based treatment options for CI12.

Instructor Bio

Justin Chelette, the founder of Texas Vision Therapy, was inspired by vision therapy after suffering from strabismus as a child. Seeing the difference vision therapy had in his own life, Dr. Chelette became passionate about helping others overcome their vision issues. Dr. Chelette attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with degrees in biology and French in 2013. He earned his doctorate in optometry at Nova Southeastern University in Florida, graduating with the highest honors in 2017.

After graduation, he went on to complete an accredited residency in vision therapy and rehabilitation through the Rosenberg School of Optometry in San Antonio. Prior to returning to Houston, he worked as an assistant professor at the Kentucky College of Optometry where he had several roles: he taught the & neuro-ophthalmic disease and acquired brain injury; course to third year students, worked in labs teaching students how to perform optometric examinations, and he was contracted to Pikeville Medical Center, the largest hospital in southeastern Kentucky, where he was their chief pediatric optometrist.

Once back in Houston, Dr. Chelette also became an adjunct faculty member at the University of Houston College of Optometry.

In his spare time, Dr. Chelette enjoys trying new foods from different cultures, listening to music (particularly Spanish music), and traveling.
