Course Description:

This seminar serves to provide training in sports and performance vision. The course will cover basic to advanced topics pertaining to sports vision evaluations and vision training activities for performance enhancement, including considerations when evaluating the concussed athlete. We will highlight pertinent testing and training variability amongst middle school, high school and collegiate athletes. We will split the sessions into two-parts with the first part focused on the assessment phase of the examination and the second part focused on the treatment and management phase. A list of start-up equipment and discussion on practice management will also be included in this seminar.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees will

• Understand the role of vision for optimal athletic performance

• Be familiar with pertinent components of a sports vision evaluation and training strategies for vision enhancement of athletes.

• Be familiar with assessment strategies and treatment options for the concussed athlete.

Bio:

Dr. Amar Sayani was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in psychology. He earned his Doctor of Optometry at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University in Philadelphia, PA in 2010. He completed his residency in pediatrics and vision therapy/rehabilitation at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN in 2013. After a few years in private practice, specifically, adult and pediatric ophthalmology, he joined faculty at Nova Southeastern University. He is currently an assistant professor of pediatric optometry. At Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry he teaches Pediatric Optometry lab, Sports Vision in Primary and Tertiary Optometric Practice course for third and fourth year students, precepts third and fourth year students primarily in Pediatrics and Binocular Vision Clinic and is director of Sports Vision and Concussion Clinic at The Eye Care Institute and NSU Sports Medicine Clinic. He is also a proud recipient of a few preceptor of the year awards from his students.

Dr. Sayani prides himself on being a well-balanced pediatric optometrist. He has a special interest in sports vision training and enhancement, post-concussion vision rehabilitation, pediatric pharmacology and learning-related visual dysfunction. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO). He is also a member of Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association (NORA) and a clinical Associate of Optometric Extension Program Foundation (OEPF).

amarDr. Sayani has lectured to optometrists, residents and other healthcare professionals in United States, Canada and Mexico. He has presented lectures and workshops in the area of sports vision enhancement and vision rehabilitation for those suffering from concussions and pediatric pharmacology and pediatric ocular emergencies. He has also presented on the visual effects of prolonged screen-time. He enjoys caring for his patients, training future clinicians and working with the highly skilled faculty at NSU College of Optometry.
