A review of structural and functional results of stroke and other brain injuries. The series will include six 2-hour lectures covering essential definitions, statistics, epidemiology, signs and symptoms, urgent versus emergent issues, neuroanatomy, the impact of visual deficits on function, neuro-imaging, tips to maximize your optometric evaluation, treatment modalities, and plans. The final 2-hour block is dedicated to discussing cases. Bring your questions and we will work through them together!
Christopher Borgman, OD, FAAO

Lecture breakdown:
Lecture 1: Background and statistics. The first lecture introduces concepts and identify the urgent need for optometric care of brain injured individuals.
Lecture 2: Signs and symptoms. The second lecture addresses the most common findings post brain injury. Clinical examples will be shared.
Lecture 3: Neuroimaging. The third lecture digs into details about CT and MRI including basic interpretation and how to coordinate with radiology.
Lecture 4: Evaluation. The fourth lecture reviews the optometric examination with highlights on technique modifications and additional testing. VEP, eye tracking, and OCT will be discussed.
Lecture 5: Treatment. The fifth lecture is an overview of core neuro-optometric rehabilitation components: lenses (occlusion, prism, and tint) and therapy (oculomotor, sensory integration, and visual processing)
Lecture 6: Wrap up and case discussion. The sixth and final lecture is an opportunity for case analysis. Presenters will have cases prepared; attendees are welcome to bring cases to discuss.
