OEPF Fireside Chat with Dr. Brad Habermehl & Dr. Jon Pederson
Join us for an engaging fireside chat hosted by Dr. Brad Habermehl featuring Dr. Jon Pederson, OEPF’s liaison to the American Optometric Association (AOA) and AOA Board member. This informal, conversational evening is designed to introduce Jon in a more personal way and explore how OEPF and AOA can work together to better support optometry—particularly students, early-career doctors, and independent practitioners.
The discussion will touch on emerging opportunities for collaboration between OEPF and AOA, including shared educational initiatives, reduced barriers to participation at national meetings, and ways to strengthen the professional ecosystem through smarter use of resources. Jon will also share insights into AOA’s independent practice and business management resources, highlighting the growing importance of differentiation, specialization, and strategic decision-making in today’s competitive optometric landscape.
Expect a relaxed format, minimal technical deep dives, and plenty of room for thoughtful conversation. Whether you’re a student, clinician, educator, or long-time supporter of OEPF, this fireside chat offers a unique window into leadership, collaboration, and what’s next for optometry.
Bio:
Dr. Jon F. Pederson, O.D. is a respected optometrist, dedicated advocate, and leader in the profession who currently serves as a Trustee on the American Optometric Association (AOA) Board of Trustees, where he acts as liaison to several key committees and to the Optometric Extension Program Foundation (OEPF). He was elected to the AOA Board in 2025, adding his voice to national efforts that support clinicians, students, and independent practice.
Dr. Pederson’s passion for optometry was shaped early in his career during a residency in geriatrics and hospital-based care at the Portland VA Medical Center following his graduation with honors from Pacific University College of Optometry. His mentors inspired him to “raise the ceiling” of optometric practice and performance—goals he continues to champion through clinical excellence and professional leadership.
For more than two decades, Dr. Pederson has volunteered with the Colorado Optometric Association (COA) and the AOA, holding roles including COA President and co-chair of its Legislative Committee. He played a central role in advancing scope of practice and vision-plan legislation in Colorado, and has helped support similar advocacy efforts in other states through his work with AOA’s State Government Relations Committee.
In recognition of his service, Dr. Pederson was named AOA Optometrist of the Year in 2023—one of several honors he has received throughout his career. Deeply committed to community care, he has volunteered for over 20 years providing comprehensive eye care with the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless and serves as a consultant optometrist for the Fort Logan Mental Health Hospital.
