When Vision Affects Learning: Understanding Visual Processing Challenges and Navigating Care – Dr. Doug Stephey
Description
Many children struggle in school because of visual processing challenges that may not be fully addressed through traditional educational support. For families who face financial or insurance barriers to vision therapy, knowing where to turn—and what questions to ask—can be especially difficult.
This special OEPF Wednesday evening session will provide practitioners, parents, educators, and advocates with an opportunity to learn more about visual processing disorders, how they can affect learning and daily life, and the role of vision care in supporting these children. The session will also address practical ways families can navigate the educational and healthcare systems, identify appropriate resources, and advocate for their children.
Most importantly, this will be an open conversation, giving everyone the opportunity to ask questions and learn from an expert in the field.
Dr. Stephey, in addition to being an optometrist, also has a master’s degree in education. In tonight’s talk he will present what his visual impairment educational testing looks like. These assessments should be funded through the IEP / 504 plan process. He will review one of his written summaries, including the functional performance surveys, review of past records, the assessments he conducts, and the staging of his treatment plan. This is designed to be a shared experience. There will be time to ask questions and to add to the discussion.
