Quantitative pupillometry (QP) has been a game-changer in my optometry practice especially as it relates to children. As a Neuro and Developmental Pediatric Optometrist focused on vision as the most accelerated route to concussion recovery as well as the catalyst to brain/child development, I’ve found it to be an invaluable objective tool for assessing and monitoring brain function in all patients especially, young ones.
When I first started using QP I limited its use as an additional affirmative tool in patients who already came with a diagnosis of concussion. However, after becoming aware of the statistic reported by the Center for Disease Control as recent as 2023, that acquired brain Injury including concussion is the leading cause of Death and Disability in 19-year-olds and under, I started using it on all my patients.
Through the use of QP, I have been able to differentiate if a child’s symptoms were due to sequalae from unaddressed concussions versus developmental visual delays that impact learning.
