Vergence, Accommodation, and the Brain: Measuring and Rehabilitating the Missing Dimension in Functional Vision Care with Dr. Zoi Kapoula

Vergence, Accommodation, and the Brain: Measuring and Rehabilitating the Missing Dimension in Functional Vision Care with Dr. Zoi Kapoula

Course Description

This lecture explores the critical but often under-measured temporal dynamics of vergence and accommodative vergence, and their role in cognitive performance, postural control, and functional vision. Drawing on decades of neuroscience research and large-scale clinical datasets, Dr. Zoï Kapoula presents objective methods to assess eye movement timing (latency, velocity, coordination) and demonstrates how these parameters directly impact reading, attention, and sensorimotor integration.

Participants will be introduced to emerging technologies that allow real-time measurement and rehabilitation of vergence, saccades, and vestibulo-ocular interactions in naturalistic conditions. Clinical case examples will illustrate applications in patients with learning-related vision problems, concussion/TBI, vestibular dysfunction, and neurodegenerative conditions.

Dr. Zoi Kapoula, PhD, HDR, EMBA

Zoï Kapoula, PhD, HDR, EMBA Paris-Sorbonne – Emeritus CNRS Research Director & Founder, Orasis-Ear (www.orasis-ear.com

Zoï Kapoula is the founder and President of Orasis-Ear, a CNRS spinoff where she leads pioneering AI-driven and clinical research on eye movements. Her work focuses on the fundamental role of ocular motor function in vision, perception, cognition, balance, and neurorehabilitation. She addresses a wide range of complex conditions, including dyslexia, strabismus, vertigo, stroke, neurological disorders, and traumatic brain injury.

With over 230 published articles and 25 supervised PhD theses, Dr. Kapoula is a globally recognized authority in her field. Her patented technologies, REMOBI and AIDEAL, are currently utilized for advanced diagnostics and neurorehabilitation . Her work involves high-level international collaborations, including projects with AIIMS New Delhi on strabismus and partnerships with research teams across Europe and functional neurologists in USA. In 2026, she was awarded the Aureus Prize from the Luxembourg University Accelerator

Her ultimate ambition is to democratize eye-movement innovation worldwide. She is dedicated to spreading these advancements into schools for the early detection and prevention of learning disorders, and into rehabilitation centers globally to support individuals with disabilities, ensuring that these life-changing technologies reach those who need them most.

Dr. Kapoula is also deeply passionate about the Art & Science intersection. For ten years, she organized and led a national CNRS and university research grouping that expanded traditional laboratory approaches to include artistic inquiry. This initiative resulted in the publication of five collective books, three of which are in English.

She is also the inventor of the REMOBI & AIDEAL technology for vergence and the founder of ORASIS-Ear.
